Sold with a letter from Claude Weisbuch dated Mars 1989, in which he states that this work was executed in 1959 for M. et Mme. Frischer while he was still a student at L’École des Beaux-Arts in Nancy.
Claude Weisbuch was born on 8th February 1927 in Thionville and was a pupil at L’École des Beaux-Arts in Nancy. Having completed his artistic training, he was appointed engraving teacher at L’École des Beaux-Arts in Saint-Etienne where he had a marked influence on his pupils.
His first exhibition was in Paris in 1957, showing engravings, and it is for this medium that he achieved principal renown although he was also a figure painter, illustrator and designer. He showed great virtuosity as an engraver and was awarded Le Prix de la Critique in 1961.
He took part in several exhibitions, notably in Paris at Le Salon de Mai, Le Salon de la Jeune Peinture, Salon d’Automne, Le Salon des Peintres Témoins de leur Temps, Le Salon d’École de Paris and at the Paris Biennial. As well as being part of large exhibitions, he also had numerous one-man shows in Paris at Galerie Hervé Odermatt from 1974 and from 1982 at Galerie Taménagal. In addition, he held shows in Toronto, Turin, London and Tokyo where he had a particularly strong following.
Illustration work undertaken by Weisbuch included: Le Cheval by Tolstoy, Le Chevalier à la Charette by Chrestien de Troyes, L’Éloge de la Folie d’Erasme and contributions to Cent-Une.
Although Weisbuch was greatly influenced by L’École de Paris, he nevertheless displayed his own interpretation of these influences. He rapidly mastered his own personal technique of engraving although one can discern the line of descent from Daumier. His themes of musicians, theatre, opera and equestrian subjects in particular, display an expression of passionate humanity tinged with a hint of violent energy.
Examples of his work can be seen in museums in Paris (Musée Nationale d’Art Moderne, Musée d’Art Moderne de a Ville and La Bibliothèque Nationale), Nancy, Rennes, Mulhouse and Strasbourg. In 1992, the Nancy museum staged a retrospective of his work.
